  2. Are You Spending Too Much on Cataract Surgery ? -- A review of updated medical necessity criteria and CMS/Medicare Expanded Fraud Investigations

Medical necessity criteria for cataract surgery has historically been based upon the single data point of best corrected Snellen acuity being worse than 20/40.  Medical necessity criteria have now been re-defined as “functional impairment in specific activities of daily living”.  Many local carriers are now requiring a written assessment tool to fulfill this statutory requirement. This standard has been adopted by the American Academy of Ophthalmology in its Preferred Practice Patterns. The provider community has been slow to respond to these new standards. This presentation will review the implications for healthplans of this changing regulatory environment and their ongoing obligations to provide quality care while spending funds prudently and maintaining compliance in an environment of increased regulatory scrutiny.

    Presenter
    Mark C. Ruchman MD
    Chief Medical Officer, Superior Vision
